About
This is the section where I'm supposed to talk about myself in the third person, sorry, no can do, I was born in Lancashire and now live in Yorkshire - my twofold Northerness doesn't allow a third person.
Even though I have no formal training as a painter, I have always been a creative, I studied Exhibition Design at Humberside University and for the last twenty-something years I've worked as a freelance photographic stylist. Interior styling is pretty much painting pictures with objects, I have a specific crop to work with, composition to work out, objects to place and colours to co-ordinate. On top of this, and the most important, I watch how the photographer uses their studio lights to bring an image to life. There starts my obsession with light.
For me, the light in a painting is the most important component by far. It brings atmosphere like nothing else and it's the one thing I constantly strive to get right, if it's not right, no matter how well I've painted everything else, the painting gets binned. I have a half-full bin (it used to be full, so I'm making progress).
I picked up the brushes seriously in 2017 when I converted half our single garage into a studio. It's tiny, but it's all mine. I can lock the door and I can lose myself. If I could move in, I would.
In 2025 I began a new creative obsession - bas relief botanical tiles, they're plaster cast tiles which hang on the wall just like a painting. I imprint wild flowers and foliage into clay and from this I can a make a tile which captures all the detail of the flowers and foliage in 3D effect. It's a fabulous technique and dying the plaster with contrasting colours make the details even more beautiful.
I currently live in Leeds, West Yorkshire with my pretend husband, beautiful daughter and bat-shit crazy Border Terrier.
